Dear Oskar // 11 Months

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

No one seems to want to acknowledge that you are 11 months, it is always “almost 1.” Which yes, this is true, you are almost one year old, but I don’t want this month to be a countdown. I want to celebrate THIS month and THIS age. Alright, alright… I may be a little sensitive about the upcoming birthday, but you have a few weeks of 11 months left, so lets focus on that and forget about all that mushy mumbo jumbo I’ll end up writing next month.

You point at everything saying “whasat” and sometimes “whasis” so I’m obviously convinced you mean “what is that?” and “what is this?” You like your toys just fine, but they are no match for your dad’s phone charger and Mischa’s water bowl. Thankfully, these two things have not been played with together. But you’re quick and I’m often distracted, so it’s only a matter of time.

There is a lot of walking with your IKEA cart, giving kisses, screaming as the cat runs by, and annoying the dog. We take a walk every morning and often see deer, and recently the baby deer. It’s so exciting when you spot them all by yourself and get really excited.

You are a wild child, Oskar. Your smiles and silliness make up for the exhaustion and chaos. Being a work at home mama is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but anytime I feel like it’s all too much I think about how lucky I am to spend my days with you… and then I look into halfday daycare.

Sight: Sometimes I let Oskar join me in watching my guilty pleasure…. So You Think You Can Dance.

Smell: When we use disposables, I’ve been using these wipes. I really like how soft and not overly soapy they are.

Sound: Loves playing his xylophone and turns everything and anything into a drum, just like his dad.

Taste: Watch out, this kid wants to steal your snacks. Pretzels, veggie chips, whatever it is, Oskar wants it.

Touch: The past few nights I’ve noticed as Oskar lays down to sleep he grabs and cuddles his blanket, it’s so sweet.

Morning Moments

Sometimes mornings are my favorite, especially this week. While coffee is brewing I do some chores, then take Mischa on a walk through the woods behind our house. The sun has just come up so the ground and the air still have a nice crisp to them. And then I’m back home and ready to work all before 9am. It’s a really great way to start the day. Makes me stop and realize how lucky I am for what I have, that this is part of my morning routine, that I am able to work from home, that I have a nice home and beautiful wooded trails just a hop away. A little moment before the day starts and I slip into frustration and want. I hope that everyone has a moment like that in their day. Even if you have to get up a little earlier or stay up a little later. What’s your favorite time of the day?

Year One

Can’t believe it was just a year ago that Bub and I made it official. We decided to pack up the pooch and head north for a nice relaxing camping trip. We didn’t make it more than 24 hours. After arriving at our site in complete darkness, we had to pitch our brand new tent that had the worst instructions of all time. We powered through, I just kept thinking I was on Amazing Race, but instead of winning a million dollars, I would have a place to sleep. Finally we got th tent up, beers cracked, fire roaring, and good ole Misch snoozing in the dirt. Success.

The next morning after I set the 20 year old camp stove on fire, I made up some coffee and scrambled eggs and we hit the road for adventure. The area around the Au Sable River is really beautiful. Not very developed and tons of secret spots to discover and off roading to attempt… we didn’t get very far, our car is not exactly cut out for sandy trails. Since Mischa is still not healed fully from her surgery we were a little limited on what we could do with a gimpy giant dog in tow.

We went back to the campsite to hang around… it was 95 degrees, humid as hell, Mischa was panting like she had just ran a marathon and the radio indicated a wicked storm was rolling in over “all of the mitten.” We admitted failure, packed up and headed home. Two years in a row rain has tried to ruin my weekend. The weekend I picked because it hadn’t rained in over 10 yrs… screw you Farmer’s Almanac.

Back home we spent the rest of the weekend grilling up hotdogs & foil dinners, kayaking, and getting ice cream. It wasn’t at a campground, but it was perfect.

Sick & Sicker

We’re having a rough few days around here. Mischa had surgery to repair a torn ligament and I’ve come down with a wicked cold. No one should have sad eyes and sniffles in the middle of summer, damn it. Hope everyone else is having a great summer so far!

Visit me on tumblr for random phone photos… warning, you will be seeing a lot of Mischa and Norris.

Kitchen Dreaming

I would cook in you and clean you everyday, I would open your amazing accordion doors and let you breath in fresh air as often as the Michigan weather allowed, your plush pink lounge would be home to my morning coffee and permanent chilling spot for Norris, my Misch would lay on your cool cement floors and give them lots of kisses. Oh we would be so happy together Dream Kitchen.
